ABCGil
Founded in 1980, the Associação Brazileira dos Criadores de Gir Leiteiro-ABCGIL The Brazilian Association of Dairy Girs (register nº 67 at the Ministry of Agriculture and Supply) has strengthened the Dairy Gir in tropical cattle breeding.
The Brazilian Dairy Gir is the result of a process of selection developed by governmental bodies and selectors since the 1930s, derived from Gir cattle originally imported from India.
Cattle from the Dairy Gir herds undergo monthly Official Dairy Control. The National Zootechnical Archive database contains information on more than 38.000 lactations from 16.000 cows belonging to ABCGIL-associated breeders.
All the animals have a Genealogical Register issued by the Associação Brazileira dos Criadores de Zebu (ABCZ) and the animals present an average production of 3,233 kg of milk over 305 days of lactation.
Since 1985, animals from these herds have participated in the National Program for Dairy Gir Improvements, a joint project between selectors, ABCGIL, EMBRAPA, ABCZ and Artificial Insemination Centers.
It is the first Brazilian Zebu dairy breed in the world with Progeny Proven Bulls, assessing milk production, fat, protein, lactose, somatic cells, total solids and conformation and handling characteristics for calculation of Predicted Transmission Capacity (PTA).
The Dairy Gir holds top position for semen sales, being the preferred breed for crossing with dairy European Holstein cattle, contributing with milk, hardiness, strength and docility, which are fundamental characteristics for economical milk production.
ABCGIL promotes and offers guidance to breeders interested in using Gir breed dairy lines, seeking to serve the needs of tropical cattle breeding. To this end it has created the Production Certificate in partnership with Embrapa, which guarantees the legitimacy of the product, confirming the origin of the marketed animals for the purchaser.
